11.17.2024 | S. Carey

Good City Brewing | Milwaukee, WI

S. Carey has to be one of the most understated and hardest working musicians in Wisconsin. Most known for his work in Bon Iver, Carey is a member of multiple groups not to mention his prolific solo work. Over the past year and a half has toured with Bon Iver, Shadowlands, Bizhiki, and most recently solo.

As the music industry changes and ticket prices and fees skyrocketing, many artists have gone to more intimate venues. This concept is nothing new to Carey who has been doing small “Living Room” tours since as early as 2015 (that I could find). What starts as an application process ends up with 20-50 fans getting an unparalleled experience.

Though it may have been a bit larger than most shows, Good City Brewing was fortunate enough to host Sunday night. I may or may not have snagged just to make sure I wouldn’t miss it.

Anyone familiar with the Milwaukee music scene, or maybe anywhere at this point, is aware of the major issue of talking during sets. Sunday’s Carey show was the exception - one could hear a pin drop during the set. The trio dove into a 14 year catalog of S. Carey songs - some that hadn’t been performed live before.

It was a magical hour of sometimes hauntingly soft music for all those packed in. The genre bending set showcased the talent as a songwriter and artist.

Though there aren’t major dates set this year, the new Bon Iver EP may mean a tour in 2025. In the meantime keep your eyes peeled for more living room dates. They are not to be missed, and I know, I had a ticket to that first run a decade ago and couldn’t make it.
